Virginia’s Computer Science standards aim to raise our aspirations for computational instruction to enable students to engage and thrive in a digital world. Beginning in the earliest grades and continuing through 12th grade, students must develop a foundation of computer science knowledge and learn new approaches to problem solving that harness the power of computational thinking to become both users and creators of computing technology.

2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning

The Virginia Board of Education approved the 2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning at the June 21, 2024, business meeting.  The 2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning must be fully implemented by the 2025-2026 school year.

Advancing Computer Science Education Grant - Request for Proposals: EXTENDED DEADLINE 

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the Advancing Computer Science Education FY25 (ACSE) grant request for proposals (RFP) focused on Professional Learning & Instructional Resources (max award: $75,000), Student Experience & Engagement (max award: $75,000) and Implementation/Sustainability (max award: $50,000).  

All Virginia public school divisions, full-time regional public schools, and programs with a local or regional school board are eligible to submit proposals meeting the intent of the RFP document.

The Virginia Department of Education is thrilled to announce that Kathleen Fugle, Fairfax County Public Schools, has been named the 2024 Computer Science Educator of the Year! This award recognizes exceptional dedication, innovation, and excellence in K-12 computer science education.

Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)

Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching - The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Computer Science teaching is eligible for submission if the content is also aligned with mathematics or science content.
