Federal Programs

The Virginia Department of Education administers federal programs that support instruction and services to both students and institutions of learning, which includes the following initiatives:

Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA)

Amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and replaces No Child Left Behind. ESSA includes provisions that will help to ensure success for students and schools.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

Ensures services to children with disabilities throughout the nation. IDEA governs how states and public agencies provide early intervention, special education and other related services.

Federal Pandemic Relief Programs

Supports public and non-public schools during the COVID-19 pandemic. The overarching purpose of these programs is to address the impact that COVID-19 has had, and continues to have, on elementary and secondary schools in Virginia.

Safe & Drug Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA)

Works toward reducing violence, alcohol and other drug use through supporting education, prevention, and intervention activities in our Nation’s schools.

CTE Civil Rights Laws

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs Guidelines for Eliminating Discrimination and Denial of Services based on race, color, national origin, sex, and disability. VDOE is required to monitor school divisions for CTE civil rights compliance through technical assistance, analyses of information and data, and periodic on-site reviews to determine compliance.

Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act (Perkins V)

Helps to develop the academic knowledge, technical, and employability skills of secondary education students and postsecondary education students who elect to enroll in career and technical education programs and programs of study.
