Medicaid & Schools
Virginia's public schools provide health related services to students. Through the Medicaid school-based services program, the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) can reimburse school divisions for some costs associated with providing these services to children enrolled in Medicaid or FAMIS.
Preventing & Reducing Youth Substance Misuse
Opioid and drug use abatement, emphasizing the dangers of fentanyl and its spreading use amongst children and teens, and overdose prevention is a growing priority across the Commonwealth. Preventing and reducing substance use among students will allow them to thrive and reach their full potential. Research tells us there is a connection between drug use and poor academic performance. Unfortunately, substance misuse can start at an early age and negatively impact academic achievement and student success. Evidence-based prevention programs, delivered in school settings, can be a valuable way to reduce drug use among youth and help them succeed academically.
Homebound Services
Homebound instruction shall be made available to students who are confined at home or in a health care facility for periods that would prevent normal school attendance based upon a medical certification of need by a licensed physician or licensed clinical psychologist.
