Educational Options
Enrollment in Virginia Public Schools
In order to enroll a child in a public school system in Virginia, state law requires a parent or guardian of a child to provide certain information to the child's school division.
Laboratory Schools
Pursuant to § 22.1-349.1(A) of the Code of Virginia, as amended by Chapter 2 of the 2022 Acts of Assembly, Special Session I, a "College Partnership Laboratory School” (or Lab School) means a public, nonsectarian, nonreligious school in the Commonwealth established by a public institution of higher education, public higher education center, institute, or authority; or an eligible private institution of higher education as defined in § 23.1-628 related to the Tuition Assistance Grant Program.
Charter Schools
Charter schools provide options for parents and students while allowing communities and educators to create innovative instructional programs that can be replicated elsewhere in the public school system.
Private Schools
In addition to Virginia’s public schools in 132 divisions, there are private schools that provide educational opportunities, including private day schools and private residential schools for children. The Virginia Department of Education does not regulate these private schools. The Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE) is recognized for the accreditation of private schools.
Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits Program
The Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits Program has expanded education opportunities for thousands of Virginia students and families since its inception in 2012 — without impacting state support for public schools.
