About LinguaFolio®

A paper-based version of LinguaFolio® as well as supporting resources are available at no cost from the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL) Website

LinguaFolio® is a proficiency-based, learner-centered, formative assessment tool that:

  • empowers learners to manage their own language learning,
  • provides a place for learners to collect evidence showing their growth, and
  • facilitates language learning in and outside classroom.

LinguaFolio®, developed by members of the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL), is based on the European Language Portfolio (ELP) and the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements. The Can-Do statements are organized according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency levels and sublevels. LinguaFolio® relates to proficiency scales from other organizations, such as the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) and the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

LinguaFolio® consists of three parts:

  • Biography: A record of personal language-learning history that helps learners to set goals and reflect on their language learning and intercultural experiences. Included is a series of self-assessment or Can-Do statements applicable to different language learners in world language, heritage language, dual language/immersion and English-as-a-New language programs.
  • Dossier: A collection of work samples chosen by the learner to document language learning progress with the skills in each mode of communication. It can be used to demonstrate the individual’s language abilities to others, including educators, parents, peers and potential employers. In the online version, files for the dossier can be uploaded next to the Can-Do statement(s) with which they are associated.
  • Passport: A snapshot of experiences and competencies in different languages. It is updated frequently and records formal qualifications, diplomas, self-assessments and summative test scores

Virginia LinguaFolio® Online

Virginia LinguaFolio® Online crosswalks the Can-Do Performance Indicators with the Virginia World Language Standards of Learning (SOL), and serves as a system for accurately gauging student progress on the continuum of performance measures, including the development of language proficiency in the interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive modes.

Virginia LinguaFolio® Online is open to all Virginia public and private schools.  Homeschool teachers may also use this resource.

LinguaFolio® Online

The Virginia LinguaFolio® Online uses the most recent (2017) version of the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements.  The Can-Do Performance Indicators are cross-walked to the Virginia World Language Standards of Learning on the teacher interface.

LinguaFolio® Junior

LinguaFolio® Junior is an adaptation of the three LinguaFolio® components for younger learners.

NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements

The 2017 NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements represent the culmination of a collaborative effort between NCSSFL and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), to connect NCSSFL’s LinguaFolio® with ACTFL’s Proficiency Guidelines 2012 and the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners. The combining of these three documents into a single, cohesive set of statements helps clarify how a language learner’s performance points toward a specific proficiency level.

The Can-Do Statements serve as a learner self-assessment tool and as a resource for identifying what is needed to function at a specific level of proficiency. The statements also help educators plan curriculum, units of instruction, and daily lessons to help learners improve their performance and grow toward the next level of proficiency. Through multiple opportunities to show what they “can do” in classroom formative and summative assessment, unit by unit, learners collect the evidence that points toward a specific proficiency level.

The proof that a learner has reached a proficiency level can only occur through an independent assessment of proficiency, but the 2017 NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements are a tool for learners and educators to organize and support learning when they are used as part of LinguaFolio® to chart progress and collect evidence for a targeted proficiency level.
