Implementing the World Language SOL Guide
IMPLEMENTING THE WORLD LANGUAGE SOL
The Virginia Board of Education adopted revised World Language Standards of Learning on March 18, 2021.
- Recognizing that curriculum alignment efforts require planning, time, staff development, and resources, the Department of Education’s goal for the implementation schedule allows teachers to begin, in the fall of 2021, to focus instruction on the content in the 2021 World Language Standards of Learning.
- Implementation roll-out may begin with early or novice levels, with the addition of one or more levels in subsequent years.
- Full implementation should be in place for all levels by the fall of 2023, but may be implemented earlier for those divisions that have a more condensed roll-out plan.
As part of the implementation plan, school divisions should:
- review and align their world language curricula with the revised standards;
- review resource materials and correlate them with the revised standards;
- identify new materials where needed; and
- provide professional development for teachers as appropriate.
