Virginia Department of Historic Resources

The Virginia Department of Historic Resources is the State Historic Preservation Office.  Its mission is to foster, encourage, and support the stewardship of Virginia’s significant historic, architectural, archaeological, and cultural resources.

Council of Virginia Archaeologists

The Council of Virginia Archaeologists (COVA) was founded in 1975 and incorporated in 1996 as an organization dedicated to the preservation and study of Virginia’s archaeological resources. The Council fosters public awareness, knowledge, and support for the preservation of Virginia archaeology; advances knowledge through dissemination of information on Virginia’s archaeological resources; facilitates interaction between the communities of professional and avocational archaeologists in Virginia; and acts as an independent professional advisory group for the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Archaeological Society of Virginia (ASV)

The purposes of the ASV are:

• To promote the study of archeology and anthropology, especially but not limited to the prehistoric and historic periods in Virginia 
• To work for the proper conservation and exploration of archeological sites and materials
• To encourage the scientific study of archeological sites and materials and to discourage careless, misdirected, or commercial collecting of artifacts 
• To promote the spread of archeological knowledge through the media of publications, meetings, lectures, exhibits, etc. 
• To collaborate with other organizations and agencies that serve the same purposes as those of this society 
• To serve as a bond between individual members and as a link with similar organizations in other states

Archaeological Legacy Institute

The mission of Archaeological Legacy Institute is to develop ways to make archaeology more effective both in gathering important information about past human lifeways and in delivering that information to the public and the profession. A fundamental postulate is that archaeology has important messages to deliver accurately and completely to people worldwide about our origins and development as a species. In essence, ALI is devoted to archaeological research and its contributions to science and to humanity.
