Secondary English Textbook Materials Open for Public Review

UPDATE: October 24, 2024-   Secondary (6-12) English textbooks submitted for review by the Virginia Department of Education and under consideration for approval by the Board of Education are now available for public inspection. The public is invited to review the Public Access for Secondary Textbook Review  and submit written comments through the Public Survey Link ,  or by emailing colleen.cassada@doe.virginia.gov naming the email subject: Secondary Textbook Review Public Comment.

Reading and NAEP Framework Analysis Now Available

As part of the comprehensive review of the Standards of Learning to increase rigor and expectations for students, VDOE had an external party review the new English Standards of Learning (SOL) in comparison to the  Reading Framework for the 2026 National Assessment of Educational Progress (nagb.gov) NAEP is a national assessment that sets the benchmark for what students should know and the progress of the nation’s students. The crosswalk and analysis found overall strong alignment between Virginia’s new English SOL and the NAEP Reading Framework. More information can be found in the Summary of Analysis between Virginia Standards of Learning document.

Review & Revision of the 2024 English Standards of Learning

At the February 2, 2023, Board of Education meeting, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) was authorized to proceed with the review and revision process of the 2017 English Standards of Learning consistent with the schedule adopted by the Board. It is anticipated that the standards revision will be completed by January 2024.

Standards of Learning Documents for English

• The Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework comprise the English language arts content that teachers in Virginia are expected to teach and students are expected to learn.
• Test blueprints provide information on how SOL assessments are constructed.
