The Virginia Board of Education held public hearings regarding the revisions to the 2017 Computer Science Standards of Learning as shown in the 2017 and proposed DRAFT 2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning Comparison Document. The Standards of Learning identify academic content for essential components of the computer science curriculum at different grade levels for Virginia’s public schools. 


Revision of the 2017 Computer Science Standards of Learning

The Code of Virginia requires a review of Virginia’s Standards of Learning every seven years. The 2017 Computer Science Standards of Learning were adopted in 2017 and are scheduled for review in 2023-2024. 

Timeline for the Development and Revision of the Computer Science Standards of Learning

The Proposed Timeline Development and Revision of the Computer Science Standards of Learning was presented to the Board of Education on March 23, 2023. Highlights of the timeline are outlined below. 

  • Opportunities to Participate in the Review and Revision of the 2017 Computer Science Standards of Learning
  • Anticipated dates for First and Final Review of the 2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning

Public Comment on the 2017 Computer Science Standards of Learning

School division personnel and other stakeholders provided comments, suggestions, and feedback on the current 2017 Computer Science Standards of Learning through an online comment form and by emailing comments directly to Keisha.Tennessee@doe.virginia.gov. Comments were received through June 12, 2023. 

Computer Science Standards of Learning Development Committees

The revision committee application is now closed. Applications were due May 5, 2023. 

The committee meet during the summer of 2023. Committee members included teachers, principals, administrators, content specialists, or others who have expertise with the content areas and the standards.

Public Hearings for the Proposed DRAFT 2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning

The Virginia Board of Education held public hearings regarding the revisions to the 2017 Computer Science Standards of Learning as shown in the 2017 and proposed DRAFT 2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning Comparison Document

Public comment regarding the proposed 2024 Computer Science Standards of Learning was received through the public comment form and public hearings.  Public hearings were held May 01, 2024 - May 20, 2024.

Public Hearings – In-Person 

In-person public hearings were held on the following dates at 6:30 pm:   

  • May 6, 2024 - Hugo A. Owens Middle School
  • May 8, 2024 - Southwest Higher Education Center
  • May 13, 2024 - Piedmont Virginia Community College
  • May 20, 2024 - Willow Oaks Administrative Center

Public Hearings – Virtual 

Virtual public hearings were held at a variety of times to accommodate the public. The virtual public hearings were held on the following dates and times:

  • May 1, 2024 - 11:30 a.m.
  • May 9, 2024 - 11:30 a.m. 
  • May 15, 2024 - 6:30 p.m.
