Required Annual Training for School Health Staff

Local school divisions should document training of school personnel per their local policy and note date/time of training, title, training content and participant(s). Required training is outlined in the table below with supporting guidance and resources.

Anaphylaxis Required annually for all school health staff and designated school personnel per § 22.1-274.2.
Asthma Required annually for all school health staff and designated school personnel per § 22.1-274.2.
Bloodborne Pathogen Training Required annually for all school health staff and designated school personnel per school policy and § 22.1-271.3.

VDH Infection Control Resources

Free school-specific training videos on YouTube.

CPR/First Aid/AED Frequency determined by the credentialing or training provider. For all school health staff and designated school personnel per school policy and 8VAC20-131-260. School facilities and safety. The Virginia Department of Education recommends that all school health staff be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Diabetes

Training that meets the Virginia Board of Nursing requirements may be used if schools have an enrolled student with diabetes.

Required annually for all school health staff and designated school personnel per § 22.1-274.

Medication Administration for Unlicensed School Employees Required annually for all school health staff and designated school personnel per § 54.1-3408.

Schools can only administer FDA-approved medication to students in schools as per VDOE Medication Administration Guidelines.

For students with Adrenal Insufficiently

 

Administration of Solu-Cortef injections

If applicable, required annually for all school health staff and designated school personnel per § 54.1-3408.

 

For students with medical conditions requiring Medical Grade CBD/THC-A only (not OTC CBD products)

If applicable,

§ 54.1-3408.3 Certification for use of cannabis oil for treatment.

Undesignated Stock Naloxone for Opioid Overdose If applicable, refer to local school board policy per § 54.1-3408.
Seizure Training

Required for all school health staff and designated school personnel every two years per § 22.1-274.6.
