2023-2024 Teachers in Action (TIA) and Professional Learning Network (PLN) for Literacy and Language Instruction of Multilingual Learners/English Learners (EL) 

The Office of School Quality, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Office of Humanities Department (English Learner Instruction), is pleased to provide the Teachers in Action (TIA) workshop series for school divisions with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Virginia Board of Education during the 2023-2024 school year.  

The 2024 K-12 Teachers in Action will focus on Literacy and Language Instruction of Multilingual Learners/English Learners (EL). Sessions will provide professional learning on instructional routines that support multilingual learners, to include English Learners, and effective practices for literacy and language instruction within the framework of the Virginia Literacy Act and the Science of Reading.  

Participants will meet for two in-person sessions and have time between each session to implement the strategies learned and reflect on the integration of these routines and practices into instruction. Additionally, some schools will receive on-site support and coaching from a vendor on their implementation of practices from this training series by conducting learning walks and targeted professional learning for all staff. Participants will be expected to share information from this professional learning series with their colleagues and support Multilingual Learners/EL instruction within their school. 

TIA/PLN Training Series Sessions 

In Person Training Sessions:

Provide all participants training on instructional routines for literacy and language development in their classrooms. 

In-Person Training Dates: 
  • January 27, 2024 
  • April 13, 2024

Virtual Training Sessions:

Provide participants training on differentiated instruction for teachers and administrators on literacy and language development for multilingual learners in the classroom through online support and coaching. 

Virtual Training Dates: 

  • February 10, 2024 – Teacher participants (TIA) 
  • March 2, 2024 – Administrator participants (PLN) 

On-site Coaching Sessions:

Provide participants one-on-one coaching support based on classroom observations, modeling for school leadership observation practices that support multilingual learners, and further providing the school professional learning specific to the trends observed in the classroom. 

On-site Coaching Dates: 

  • March 12-14 – Richmond City Public Schools 
  • March 19-21 – Richmond City Public Schools 
  • March 25-27 – Danville Public Schools 
  • April 9-11 – Petersburg City Public Schools 
  • April 10-12 – Greensville County Public Schools 
  • April 16-18 – Danville Public Schools

The Office of School Quality, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Science Department, is pleased to provide the Teachers in Action (TIA) workshop series for school divisions with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Virginia Board of Education.  

The 2023 K-12 Teachers in Action will focus on science teaching and learning. Sessions will provide professional development that focuses on the continued implementation of engaging, aligned science instruction that includes science literacy, formative assessment, and discourse.  

Participants will have time between each session to implement the strategies learned and reflect on the integration of these best practices into instruction. Participants will be expected to share this information with their colleagues and support science instruction across the grade levels within their school. School teams will consist of science teachers and one administrator. Each school will select two teachers from the following grade-levels and content areas: K-2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Life Science, Physical Science and Biology. With the goal of building capacity within schools, it is the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) expectation that principals will select teachers who are willing to build capacity within the school and are teachers that will serve as a teacher-leader for the core areas of science.

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Science Department and science leaders across the Commonwealth of Virginia will provide all participants training on implementation of engaging, aligned science instruction, including science literacy, formative assessment, and discourse.

  • January 21, 2023, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM 
  • February 4, 2023, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM 
  • February 25, 2023, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM 

Networked Improvement Community Opportunity

The Office of School Quality, in partnership with Westat’s Region 5 Comprehensive Center, offers the Networked Improvement Community (NIC) for Virginia school division leaders across the Commonwealth. The NIC is a platform and model designed to provide division leadership teams the opportunity to work together on a problem of practice utilizing resources grounded in evidence-based best practices in both implementation and improvement science. Division teams commit to a three-year professional development cycle of Learn-Apply-Reflect-Collaborate drawing from NIC support, resources and coaching.
