TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) Cut Scores

The ASVAB is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military.  Effective  2014-2015 school year and beyond, upon successful completion of a Military Science program (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) I, II, and/or III), students taking the ASVAB examination must meet the branch-specific cut score as identified in the chart below.

ASVAB scores are used primarily to determine enlistment eligibility, assign applicants to military jobs, and to aid students in career exploration.  The "Overall" ASVAB Score is known as the Armed Forces Qualification Test Score (AFQT).  Scores are computed using the standard scores from four ASVAB subtests: Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), and Word Knowledge (WK).

Additionally, students who are enrolled in a Military Science course and earn a passing score on the ASVAB exam may use this industry certification to satisfy the graduation requirement for the Standard Diploma.  The Pass/Fail scores are submitted to the Virginia Department of Education via the Single Sign-On for Web Systems (SSWS) Career and Technical Education Credential Collection (CTECC), due by July 31, 2016.
