TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:  2014 Mathematics Standards of Learning Institutes

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce K-12 Mathematics Institutes to be held in October 2014 at four sites in the Commonwealth. These four Institutes are designed to provide teachers with professional development focused on fostering students’ abilities to make mathematical connections and use effective and appropriate representations in mathematics.

The Institutes continue to support the implementation of the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL), framed by the five goals for students becoming mathematical problem solvers, communicating mathematically, reasoning mathematically, making mathematical connections, and using mathematical representations to model and interpret practical situations.  Professional development materials based on the 2014 Mathematics SOL Institutes will be posted online for use by grade-level or subject-area teacher learning communities.

The four, one-day Institutes (8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) will be offered for teachers, division-level leaders, mathematics supervisors, instructional supervisors, professional development personnel, division lead mathematics teachers, and other administrators with responsibility for mathematics education.  Registration is limited to eight participants from each school division.

Virginia Tech’s Office of Continuing and Professional Education will manage registration. Each division superintendent or designee will select a division-level contact.  The division-level contact will identify and register the eight members of the division team.  Team members should be selected as indicated below:
