SUBJECT:  2014 Granville P. Meade Scholarship

The Department of Education is pleased to announce the Granville P. Meade Scholarship which provides financial assistance to students who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college.  The Granville P. Meade fund awards scholarships to eligible Virginia high school seniors to attend one of Virginia's public or private colleges or universities.  Additional information about the scholarship is in Attachment A and Attachment B contains the scholarship application.

Principals of all public and nonpublic high schools are requested to assist in making students aware of the scholarship opportunity.  It is anticipated that the scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $2,000 per year for four years, provided the student continues to meet the scholarship requirements.

The application and selection timeline is as follows:

March 14, 2014

Deadline for public and private school students to submit scholarship application to their high school principal.

March 28, 2014

Deadline for principals at public and private schools to forward selected applications to the division or association office.

April 11, 2014

Deadline for the public school division superintendents to forward the five selected school applications to the chairperson of their regional study group screening committee. (Attachment C) (Not applicable for private/home school applicants)

April 25, 2014

Deadline for the final five selected applications from the regional study groups and from private and home school associations to be mailed to:

Notification by the Virginia Department of Education of scholarship recipients.
