December 14, 2012

TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:  Free Access to SCOLA Services for International Television Programming and Online Content

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce free access for Virginia schools to all Satellite Communications for Learning Associations (SCOLA) services from January 1, 2013 through May 31, 2013.  SCOLA is a non-profit educational organization that receives and retransmits television programming from around the world.  SCOLA also provides language learning content online that can be downloaded, archived, printed and used in classrooms.  A list of all available services is included in Attachment A.

As per the terms of this opportunity, interested Virginia schools may access all SCOLA services via the link included in Attachment A.  Please feel free to disseminate the attached information at your discretion to schools and departments within your division.  The login codes can be used by administrators, teachers, and students in all content areas, and may be of special interest to foreign language and history and social science classes.

There is no obligation to continue services after the free access period; however, schools and/or divisions that wish to continue to access the SCOLA services will be given the opportunity to participate in special pricing plans.  Additional terms of participation are included in Attachment A.

At the conclusion of the free access period, Virginia school divisions may choose to subscribe to SCOLA services if they wish to continue to participate.  Individual school divisions need to contact SCOLA directly to request a SCOLA affiliation; VDOE will not be serving as a subscription intermediary.  Please contact Ms. Kathryn Larson at SCOLA by e-mail at by May 1, 2013 if you would like to discuss a SCOLA affiliation.

For further information, please contact Dr. Lisa Harris, specialist for foreign languages, Office of Humanities and Early Childhood, by e-mail at or by telephone at (804) 225-3666.
