TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:  School Psychology Awareness Week (November 12-16, 2012)

The Virginia Department of Education joins the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists and the National Association of School Psychologists in celebrating School Psychology Awareness Week, November 12-16, 2012.  As schools and school divisions continue to refine their efforts to improve teaching and learning for all students, the contributions of school psychologists are noteworthy.  School psychologists work with all students, educators, parents, and administrators, to create bully-free, safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments focused on collaboration, cooperation and maximum achievement.

Working with school administrators, counselors, and other specialists, school psychologists are helping schools and school divisions develop tiered systems of support for improved student learning and behavior.  I encourage you to celebrate School Psychology Awareness Week with your school psychologists.

Questions regarding school psychological services may be directed to Dr. Wayne Barry, via e-mail at, or telephone at (804) 692-0396.
