TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Patricia I. Wright, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT:  K-12 Mathematics Standards of Learning Institutes

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is pleased to announce the K-12 Mathematics Institutes to be held in October 2012 at eight sites in the Commonwealth. These eight Institutes are designed to provide teachers with professional development on developing and using formative assessment resources to drive instructional decision making in mathematics.

The Institutes will continue implementation support of the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL), framed by the five goals for students becoming mathematical problem solvers, communicating mathematically, reasoning mathematically, making mathematical connections, and using mathematical representations to model and interpret practical situations.  The Institutes will provide support:

These one-day Institutes (8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) will be offered in a train-the-trainer professional development format for teachers, division-level leaders, mathematics supervisors, instructional supervisors, professional development personnel, division lead mathematics teachers, and other administrators with responsibility for mathematics education.  Registration is limited to eight participants from each school division.

Virginia Tech’s Office of Continuing and Professional Education will manage registration. Each division superintendent or designee should identify a division-level contact that will identify the members of the eight-person team.  Division teams should be structured so there are two designated participants (one division-level mathematics leader and one teacher) for each of the following grade-band sessions within each Institute:

Registration for each of the eight sites will be closed two weeks prior to the Institute or when registration is filled.  Registration can be completed online by the division contact or by identified division-level participants at  Participating teams may select only one site among the eight offered at the following locations:
