SUBJECT:  Teacher Recruitment and Retention Bonuses – Mathematics, Physics, and Technology Education Pilot

The Governor and the Virginia General Assembly approved funding in the 2012-2014 budget to conduct a pilot to attract, recruit, and retain new teachers of mathematics, physics, and technology education.  This pilot program will provide bonuses in fiscal year 2013 to new teachers with no teaching experience who meet specified criteria and are employed in a Virginia public middle or high school.

Eligible teachers for the pilot must meet the following requirements:

Successful teachers selected to participate in the pilot program will be eligible to receive a $5,000 initial incentive award after the completion of the first year of teaching with a satisfactory performance evaluation and a contract for the following year.  An additional $1,000 incentive award may be granted for each year the eligible teacher receives a satisfactory evaluation and teaches mathematics, physics, or technology education (with an active license with the appropriate endorsement) for up to three years in a middle or high school in a Virginia school division.

Funding will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis (with distribution in all three endorsement areas) with preference to teachers assigned to teach in hard-to-staff schools or schools in improvement.  Bonuses are contingent upon available funding. The bonuses are taxable to the recipient, and the school division is responsible for ensuring all taxes are remitted.

The attached application must be received no later than September 28, 2012.  Please submit the application to Mrs. Patty S. Pitts, assistant superintendent for teacher education and licensure, Virginia Department of Education, P. O. Box 2120, Richmond, Virginia.  A form and instructions to request reimbursement of these funds will be sent to the school divisions with teachers who are accepted into the pilot at a later date.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Patty S. Pitts at (804) 371-2522 or by e-mail at
