## Virginia Students Again Outscore Nation on ACT

*Achievement up in all Subjects on College Admissions Test *

Virginia public school students outperformed their peers nationwide by significant margins on the ACT this year while improving their performance in all subjects on the college admissions test.

The percentage of Virginia public school students meeting the ACT’s college-readiness benchmark in each content area was 18 or more points higher than the percentages nationwide. The college-readiness benchmarks identify students whose ACT scores indicate that they are prepared for first-year college English composition, reading, algebra and biology.

- In English, 79 percent of Virginia students met the benchmark, compared with 61 percent nationwide.
- In mathematics, 60 percent of Virginia students met the benchmark, compared with 41 percent nationwide.

Virginia public school 2017 graduates achieved gains on all four portions of the ACT (English, mathematics, reading and science) compared with the average scores in 2016.

The commonwealth’s public school students achieved an average composite score of 23.7 on the ACT, compared with 21.0 for graduates nationwide. Public school students accounted for 58 of the 69 Virginia graduates who achieved perfect scores on the test.

“Nearly twice as many Virginia students take the ACT today than ten years ago, making it an increasingly important indicator of how well the commonwealth’s public schools are preparing young people for the future,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Steven R. Staples said. “The latest results continue a long-term trend of higher achievement and increasingly well-prepared graduates.”

ACT results are reported on a scale of 1 to 36, with 36 being the highest score. An estimated 29 percent of 2017 Virginia graduates – including private and home-schooled students – took the ACT. The overall composite score for Virginia high school graduates – public, private and home-schooled – was 23.8, compared with 23.3 in 2016.
