Change in the Implementation Timeline for End-of-Course (EOC) Tests Assessing the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning

As stated in Superintendent's Memo No. 244-16, the Virginia Board of Education adopted the Revised 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning on September 22, 2016.  This memo indicated that the 2018-2019 school year would be the Full-Implementation Year to include the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning in the school division’s written, taught, and tested curricula.

A subsequent memo, Superintendent's Memo No. 284-17, indicated the revised assessments measuring the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning would be administered for the first time in the fall of 2018 for End-of-Course (EOC) Algebra I, EOC Geometry, and EOC Algebra II; however, this timeline has changed. The EOC mathematics tests measuring the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning will instead be implemented in the spring of 2019 test administration along with the revised grades 3-8 mathematics tests.

The EOC mathematics tests administered in the fall of 2018 will continue to assess the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning and include field test items measuring the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning.  In EOC mathematics classrooms affected by this change, the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning and 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning are to be included in the written and taught curricula.

The 2016 mathematics test blueprints have been revised to reflect this new EOC mathematics test implementation schedule and are currently available at Standards of Learning (SOL) and Testing – Mathematics 2016.

The revised implementation timeline for the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning and 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework follows:

2017-2018 School Year – Crosswalk Year

  • 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning and 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning are included in the written and taught curricula.
  • Fall 2017 Standards of Learning assessments measure the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning and will not include field test items measuring the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning.
  • Spring 2018 Standards of Learning assessments measure the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning and will include field test items measuring the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning.

2018-2019 School Year – Full-Implementation Year

  • 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning and 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning are included in the written and taught curricula in classrooms administering Fall 2018 Standards of Learning assessments.
  • 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning are included in the written and taught curricula in classrooms administering Spring 2019 Standards of Learning assessments.
  • Fall 2018 Standards of Learning assessments, including End-of-Course (Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II), will measure the 2009 Mathematics Standards of Learning and include field test items measuring the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning.
  • Spring 2019 (Grades 3-8 and End-of-Course) Standards of Learning assessments measure the 2016 Mathematics Standards of Learning.
