TO:  Division Superintendents

FROM:  Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction

SUBJECT: Virtual Virginia Registration

The Virginia Department of Education (DOE) reminds school divisions that registration for the Virtual Virginia 2017 summer session and 2017-2018 academic year opens on April 1.  More than 70 online courses, including certain core, Advanced Placement (AP), world language, and elective courses will be offered. A full-time program, in addition to the supplemental program, modeled after the current partnership with Virginia public schools will continue to be offered. The full-time program will offer all required courses for grades 9-12, along with an additional compliment of world language courses and electives.  More information on the full-time program is available at http://www.virtualvirginia.org/FullTimeProgram/index.htmlThis link takes you out of the Virginia Department of Education website.

There is no tuition charged for Virginia public school students who enroll in standard core, world language, and elective courses.  Virginia public school students participating in the Early College Scholars (ECS) program will have tuition and AP examination fees reimbursed by the DOE for any Virtual Virginia AP course taken. We encourage all students who take AP courses to take the associated examinations so they may earn college credit.  Tuition for non-ECS students will be $375 times the local composite index. Information about the ECS program is available at http://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/graduation/early_college_scholars/index.shtml. A withdrawal fee will be assessed after the 21-day withdrawal period. More information about 2017-2018 tuition, withdrawal fees, and course requirements can be found at www.virtualvirginia.orgThis link takes you out of the Virginia Department of Education website. During the regular school year, schools are required to provide textbooks, computer access, headsets and microphones, and access to an adult to act as a mentor-proctor for students.

The Virtual Virginia 2017 summer session will offer 35 online courses including core and elective courses. The summer session course dates are June 19-July 28, 2017.  The Virtual Virginia Helpdesk will be available during the summer session from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. (Monday-Friday). The tuition for Virginia public school students who enroll in summer session courses is $375 per course. Tuition must be paid at the time of course registration and must be made with an electronic debit, credit, or prepaid card. A withdrawal fee will be assessed after a 7-day withdrawal period during the summer session.
